Snack Time

“People who love children change the world by teaching them how to eat.”
– Jan Katzen-Luchenta

There is evidence that suggests that good nutrition enhances our ability to learn and develop; this is especially true for children. At our three schools, we provide a food balance of fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, protein, and “good fats” for snack, prepared daily by the children.

The snacks we offer include (but are not limited to) a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables such as squash, green beans, sweet peppers and asparagus (not just carrots and cucumber!). We serve whole grain breads, hot cereals, and couscous. Protein offered is that of beans, nut/soy butters, yogurt, cheese, and soy. Omega-3 fatty acids found in fish, flax seed, and canola are excellent sources of “good fats” and are also served at snack time when appropriate.

We encourage each child to try the different foods even if it is not familiar to them; three of their favorites are salmon spread, hummus and fruit smoothies that they have made in their classrooms!

It is our hope that these food experiences will instill a lifetime of good nutrition and health for each child.
